"Layer Cakes" is the 4th installment of the "SPready Baked L'Oven" series, which is Spread's personal therapy project to help him cope with the fact he had to sell his SP1200 a few months back due to the financial losses of covid-19. Fortunately, he made hundreds of beats on it, so we can still relive the glory of this beautiful 12-bit sound through these releases.
The name "Layer Cakes" refers to the fact that, although these beats were conceived and programmed on the SP1200, all these tunes have other elements layered on top of the SP1200 "skeleton" beat (which is how most of Spread's music is/was made...12-bit sounds cool, but sometimes you need beef it up with some live drums, keys or more modern sounds). The previous 3 SPready Baked L'Oven projects were just raw beats straight from the "mix out" of the SP1200. Much of this current project contains songs which have vocal versions that have been released or will be released soon. But this is an instrumental project, so these versions were specially mixed, mastered and arranged especially for this release. And since we are so close to Halloween, Spread chose some extra spooky and slightly melancholy samples to guide you through the music.
Spread does all the cuts on this album (he's a DJ ya know) and many of the live drums and instrumentation, except where noted. There are a handful of musicians on these tracks, but most of the hired hands are 2 of Spread's besties, Devon Ashley on drums and Jeremy Radway on guitar and bass.
This is our favorite SPready Baked treat yet! It is a true insight into Spread's creative process and a more of a representation of how his completed music sounds. There's LAYERS to this, ya know?
