This is another one that is mostly an SP1200 beat, the only thing I added was the live hi hats. But again, they make all the difference. Especially since this song is such a slow tempo, it gives it some feel.
The other "layering" part of this is kinda cool for beat nerds. Since this is from Curtis Mayfield's "I Loved and I Lost," the instruments are hard panned, as was the practice in the day. But the SP1200 is a mono only machine, no stereo, so when I went to sample the chorus, the vocals didn't show up except for the reverb bleed, it was all the left channel rhythm section...which is awesome! You really couldn't make this beat on another machine and freak it like this. Once I got the song all sequenced out on the SP, I went back in pro tools and layered the original line I used for the chorus in stereo on top of the existing mono track. Like I said, nerd shit. But if you read this far, I can dig it!
