12 Shoe Blazer Remix - SPREAD - Layer Cakes

about

This track either needs lots of explanation or none at all lol. Its a weird ass track. But I still love it. Here's the story:
My homies, Devon and Eastside Larry, came over and were like "Yo, this shoe gazer band asked us to remix a song for them, you want to help?"
And of course, the first thing I said was "wtf is a shoe gazer?"
Then they explained it and I realized that I dig some of that stuff, just didn't realize the genre has such a specific name.
Anyway, I was all about the remix. Matter of fact, I'm ALWAYS all about the remix. Send me your stuff and I'll flip ya for real like Fenster.
So, we listened to the acapella they had given us and kind didn't really know what to do. Didn't really understand where the groove should be and we refused to listen to the original because we wanted to make something new, not just put an acapella over a beat.
So while they rolled up, I went to work chopping on the SP. I understood the feeling of the tune, but wasn't sure exactly what it was about. So I just took my favorite 3 words they sang in the song and chopped the shit out of them. This was right before Dilla had passed and we were all still so geeked of that "Dollars Cirulate" beat, I tried to do my best Dilla impression and chop the words up like he would do. So we ended up with 3 parts: "feeeeeeel" "have fuuuuuuun" and the freakout part at the end. I programmed a super simple skeleton beat for the first section, Devon programmed the drums for the next section, then he added a pass of vocal chops he had done in the ASR-X (red box). Then the 3 of us did a live take in this tiny little room; me on turntables doing live cuts, Devon playing sub bass on the ASR and Eastside Larry (who was on a mushroom binge at the time lol) did the guitar solos, which was going through my moogerfooger low pass filter (which I was adjusting as he played) into his Marshall and mic'd up. The results were pretty trippy.
Oh yea, then the next day I went to work (where I made most of my beats at the time lol) and added the little hi-hat percussion part using fruity loops lol...so this track uses SP1200, ASR-X, Fruity Loops, electric guitar and turntables...lol
As far as I know, the original group either hated it or just didn't know what to do with it and it's kinda been in purgatory for 15 years...I really dig the tune still though! Hope you do too!
