about

I'm a huge Smokey Robinson fan, but most of the records I have are old and pretty scratched up and crackly, so I was quite excited when I heard this isolated bassline with Smokey crooning over it and no big crackles or skips.
This was definitely something I could only do in Ableton. I sliced the bassline up and stared finding little grooves within the groove and played a pattern I liked. Since it was kinda this bouncy up-tempo kinda thing, I made my snares hit hard but with much more reverb than I usually do. I guess it was kind of a Timbaland and Neptunes influenced vibe. I could definitely hear Missy or Busta over this one.
I actually recreated this with just Ableton and a controller for a live beat set once and blew everyone away, since I learned to play the drum pattern and the sample pattern at the same time with no sequencing. This version is sequenced though.I had to practice a lot to pull that off
